'Super Week' Kicks Off in Fort Worth

NM_25FortWorthPrepare1.jpg
Today marks the official start of ‘Fort Worth's Super Week,' and I am so excited to have the Super Bowl in my home town. ESPN will be broadcasting nearly 80 hours of television from Sundance Square and city officials are expecting a huge influx of people for the festivities.

With all the extra pedestrians I want to remind drivers, including myself, to remain especially alert when driving anywhere near Super Bowl festivities. Distracted driving is just not an option.

Cars kill about 5,000 pedestrians each year in the U.S. As a Fort Worth pedestrian accident attorney, I handle cases like this all the time. But with your help, let's make sure everybody stays safe when driving and walking during Super Bowl weekend. Here are some of my suggestions:

•Know where you're going and where you're parking before driving anywhere, that way you won't get lost or have to be on your cell phone getting directions
•Give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go so you won't be rushed
•If you're walking somewhere, don't automatically expect drivers to stop for you and remember to obey pedestrian rules; they help ensure your safety

Hopefully during Super Bowl week the only thing to get hurt is the feelings of the team that loses. Now, who are y'all rooting for?

Super Bowl Safety Tips for North Texans

Well, its official, the Packers and the Steelers will be playing in Super Bowl XLV on February 6, 2011 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. There has been much anticipation in the Dallas and Fort Worth communities for the upcoming game, and approximately 299 Super Bowl Week events are planned leading up to the game all around the metroplex.

Approximately 250,000 people will be flooding into North Texas the week of the game, and with that many extra people, it is important to take the necessary safety precautions when driving on Dallas highways the weekend of the game.

In 2006 the NHTSA reported that 130 people died during Super Bowl Weekend as the result of impaired driving or alcohol related crashes. The super bowl is always a great reason for a celebration, but people should remember whether they are attending the super bowl, or a super bowl party, that they need to have a designated sober driver in order to avoid becoming a drunk driving statistic.

Here are a few easy tips for staying safe Super Bowl weekend:

•Have the number for a local cab company programmed in your phone
•Designate a sober driver for the evening, before heading out for the day's festivities
•If you are hosting a super bowl party, stop serving alcohol during the third quarter
•If you are attending the super bowl, make sure you are consistently aware of the people around you, and report suspicious looking activities to the police

Five Texas Car Insurance Companies That Will Get You Sued

If you have been involved in a car accident in the Fort Worth Dallas area, chances are a car insurance liability insurance company will be involved. All companies are motivated to pay out as little as they can on claims, but the fact is that some are fairer than others. Some refuse to pay out money even when it is clear they owe it. My quick list of the five worst insurance companies in Texas are United Auto, Fred Loya, ACCC, Affirmative and Sante Fe. If you are insured by one of these companies, it will mean there is a much higher chance that you will get sued if you are the one who causes the car accident. And if you were not at fault for the car wreck, but the responsible party for the accident was insured by one of these companies, then get ready for a long and hard battle for fair compensation.

11 Taken To Hospitals In Fort Worth Bus Collision | DFW Accident Attorney Mark A. Anderson

Eleven people were taken to hospitals Tuesday night after a Fort Worth City bus called the T and a Nissan collided at the south end of downtown. The wreck occurred about 7:20 p.m. at East Lancaster Avenue and Calhoun Street. The bus was traveling through a green light when it was struck by the Nissan.

The driver of the Nissan and 10 of the 28 passengers on the bus were taken to hospitals and none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. Another bus was called and the remaining passengers continued on their route about 45 minutes later. The Fort Worth Police Department as well as the Fort Worth Transportation Authority, are still investigating the bus crash.

A thorough investigation is pretty typical for bus crashes like this. I am glad to hear that all of the injuries in both parties seemed to be okay considering studies show accidents involving busses account for 8% of vehicles involved in fatal crashes. Hopefully since the injuries are non-life-threatening all 11 people didn't have to stay the night in the hospital.

Good News to Start the New Year: Texas Raises Minimum Liability Limits Starting January 1, 2010

A new law goes into effect today that raises the minimum car insurance liability limits in the state of Texas from $25,000 to $30,000. This may not sound like that big of a deal, but believe me, it is a great new law. As a personal injury attorney, I handle car accident cases in the Ft. Worth/Tarrant County area and I see time and time again the following situation: a client of mine is seriously injured in a car wreck that was caused by someone else's bad driving, but the only compensation available is the minimum limits policy of the bad driver. That minimum limits policy must be used to pay for all the bills (ambulance, hospital, doctors.....). Oftentimes, that one policy is not enough to pay for all of the damages.

The new law, which applies to all auto liability policies renewed beginning today, is a big deal as it makes $5,000 more money available for those claimants who have claims whose value is equal to or exceeds the minimum limits. Since the cost of medical care is so high, many claims' value is well above the $30,000 amount. The extra $5,000 does not solve all problems, but it does help pay these bills and hopefully come closer to fully compensating the injury victim.

Just discussing the high cost of medical care reminds me to suggest (again) that everyone carry uninsured motorists protection. It's cheap and is great insurance to carry as it compensates YOU for your injuries if the bad driver has no insurance or does not have enough insurance. There are tons of uninsured drivers out there, so this is the best kind of insurance to carry.
